Background

A palliative oncologist by profession, ethicist and deontologist by devotion, and compassionist by passion. Part of the team “PalmaCompasiva,” a project encompassed within “The Compassionate Cities.”

About the Project

This Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) is aimed at informal caregivers (often relatives) of patients with degenerative diseases, such as dementia, who belong to an association called “mans a les mans” (“hands that help hands”).

The goal is to provide these caregivers with a self-care tool to prevent “Caregiver Syndrome,” a physical and mental exhaustion caused by continuous stress, the burden of caregiving, loss of independence, and neglect of self-care.

The People

Middle-aged individuals who learned to operate Zoom with great enthusiasm for the course. None of them dropped out throughout the program.

The Impact

Participants shared heartfelt testimonials:

• “My life has a before and after starting compassion training.”

• “I am very grateful; it is helping me a lot, teaching me to know myself and to see those around me differently (and much better).”

• “It’s the start of a more bearable life for ourselves and those around us. Thank you!”
