On February 14, 2025, love took center stage at the Kolping Society of Nigeria Event Hall in Umuahia, Abia State, as couples with disabilities gathered for a special Valentine’s Day celebration. The Couples with Disability Hangout, an event dedicated to fostering connection, resilience, and joy, provided a space where love thrived beyond limitations.
A celebration of togetherness
The venue was transformed into a haven of warmth and festivity, adorned with love-themed decorations that set the tone for an uplifting day. Couples arrived, greeted by an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, ready to share in a celebration that honored their unique journeys.

Inspiration through shared experience
The event was more than just a gathering; it was an opportunity for couples to gain wisdom and strength from one another. A highlight of the day was the marriage mentorship session, where Mr. Eze Urasi, a visually impaired man who has been married for 32 years, took the stage with his wife, Mrs. Okpechi Roseline Urasi. Together, they answered questions from younger couples, sharing heartfelt stories of resilience and commitment.
Throughout the day, speakers delivered powerful messages about love and understanding, reminding couples that their relationships, though faced with unique challenges, are also filled with deep strength and enduring affection.
Music, laughter, connection
Entertainment played a key role in the event, with comedy acts, DJ performances, and lively dance sessions bringing laughter and excitement to the hall. Couples participated in interactive sessions designed to encourage open conversations, offering each other advice and encouragement.
Beyond the festivities, the event provided a vital opportunity for networking. Couples connected with others who share similar experiences, strengthening a sense of belonging and support within the community.

A call for more support
The impact of the hangout was deeply felt by participants, many of whom expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate love in such an inclusive and empowering setting. The Abia State woman leader of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) noted that communities like theirs are often overlooked. She praised the organizers—the GCC, JONAPWD, and their partners—for recognizing the importance of such an event.
Looking ahead, attendees voiced their hopes for an even bigger and more impactful gathering in 2026, with expanded activities, additional resources, and greater support for couples facing economic challenges. Calls were made for increased sponsorships to ensure the event continues to grow and reach more couples in need of encouragement and community.
Success to build upon
With approximately 55 people in attendance, including couples and leaders from JONAPWD’s Abia State Chapter, the Couples with Disability Hangout was a resounding success. More than just a Valentine’s Day celebration, it was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and inclusion.
The event would not have been possible without the generosity of individuals and organizations that provided vital support, including venue sponsorship, diesel for power, decorations, refreshments, and media promotion. Their contributions made it possible to create a space where love was not only celebrated but deeply affirmed.
As plans take shape for future editions, one thing is certain: love, in all its forms, will continue to shine brightly in this community, proving that true connection knows no boundaries.
