Progress report from Uganda’s Connectors

In the heart of Uganda, Peter Waiswa and his dedicated colleagues have been diligently working to strengthen the connectors team for the Global Compassion Coalition (GCC).

One of the remarkable achievements of Waiswa and his team has been the expansion of their skills base, with an increasing number of individuals joining the Connectors team. These Connectors bring a diverse range of academic and vocational skills, enriching the collective capabilities of the group. As they continue to grow, the support and approval from the community and partners have also seen a significant rise, underscoring the vital role they play in the local context.

Harnessing a strong relationship with the community, the team has acquired essential resources to kickstart their initiatives. With the procurement of three laptops and a desk, they have begun training Connectors in computer skills. This capacity-building endeavor aims to equip Connectors with the necessary tools to leverage the internet effectively in their compassionate endeavors. Looking ahead, the team envisions establishing a GCC community resource center, which will serve as a hub for knowledge dissemination and skill development, meeting the needs of the community more comprehensively.

Beyond computer training, the team has made strides in vocational education, thanks to the expertise of individuals like Ivan, a qualified mechanics instructor among the Connectors. Leveraging Ivan’s skills, they have initiated mechanics training for disadvantaged youth in the community, many of whom have dropped out of school due to financial constraints. Recognizing the potential of these youth, the team is empowering them with practical skills that can offer a pathway out of poverty.

However, challenges persist, such as the need for functional equipment and resources. The team’s ambition to provide quality training is hindered by the lack of tool kits and a functional car engine for practical learning. With the number of participants increasing steadily, they appeal for publicity and support to acquire these essential resources, ensuring the effectiveness of their vocational training programs.

Furthermore, the team’s commitment to addressing the specific needs of vulnerable groups is exemplified by Suzan, a qualified tailor Connector. Focused on empowering teenage mothers and young dropout girls, Suzan is leading tailoring training sessions, providing them with valuable skills for economic independence. The overwhelming demand for these programs underscores the urgency of providing additional support to sustain and expand such initiatives.

Despite the challenges, the vision of the Global Compassion Coalition Vocational Training Center is gradually taking shape, offering hope and opportunities to marginalized communities. Through the dedication and ingenuity of individuals like Peter Waiswa and his team, lives are being transformed, and communities are being empowered to thrive against all odds.

In a world often characterized by disparities and inequalities, initiatives like those led by Waiswa and the remind us of the power of compassion and collective action in creating a brighter, more equitable future for all.
