The effect of a cultural sensitivity education program on the intercultural sensitivity and compassion levels of Turkish nurses

A randomized controlled trial

This study investigated the potential of a cultural sensitivity education program to improve intercultural sensitivity and compassion among Turkish nurses. Compassion is a fundamental aspect of nursing, is essential for ensuring the well-being and comfort of patients. With the increasing cultural diversity in healthcare settings, nurses must be equipped to provide care that respects individuals’ unique cultural values and beliefs.

This study involved 64 nurses who were divided into two groups. The intervention group participated in a cultural sensitivity education program, while the control group did not. The program’s effectiveness was evaluated using surveys administered before the training, one week post-training, and three months post-training. Nurses in the intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in their capacity to understand and respect cultural differences. Furthermore, they exhibited heightened levels of compassion compared to the control group.

These research findings highlight the importance of education in cultivating culturally competent care. Healthcare organizations can better equip nurses to address the needs of diverse patient populations by incorporating cultural sensitivity training into nursing curriculam and professional development programs. This form of training not only enhances the quality of care for patients but also enhances the professional growth and satisfaction of nurses.

In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of holistic and culturally sensitive care within the healthcare sector. It serves as a call to action for policymakers, educators, and healthcare administrators to prioritize such training, ensuring that nurses are equipped to deliver compassionate, inclusive, and effective care in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
