How to take civic action

Democracy lives or dies depending on the support of the public. The minute people start to disengage, democracy is weakened. It means there is less accountability, fewer voices and ideas being heard, and decisions start to be made that favour a minority who stay involved.

This, sadly, is the picture across many of the world’s democracies. According to the Global Democracy Index, democracy is in retreat as fewer people vote or otherwise engage in elections. And, increasingly, that is causing some nations to turn away from the basic idea of democracy and embracing more totalitarian regimes.
